The ruthenium‐catalyzed synthesis of 1,2‐diketones through the oxidation of alkynes by using sodium hypochlorite has been investigated. RuO 4 was generated in situ from inexpensive RuCl 3 · x H 2 O, and NaOCl as the oxidant demonstrated high performance at room temperature in the solvent diethyl carbonate. A variety of diketones were prepared in good yields by using this environmentally friendly procedure.
