An array of 1,3‐diarylbenzo[ c ]thiophenes have been synthesized by the ring‐opening of lactones followed by thionation using Lawesson's reagent with concurrent intramolecular cyclization. Photophysical studies of the various benzo[ c ]thiophene analogues are presented.
