The cover picture shows a macrocyclic molecule comprising a mechanically revolving subunit as a potential electrical switch on a single molecule level. Mechanical concepts have already been applied very successfully at the Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe GmbH to minute objects like the tiny gearwheel in the micrometer range presented by an ant. The expansion of these ideas to molecular devices is a fascinating scientific challenge at the interface between chemistry and nanotechnology. The synthesis and characterization of the macrocycle are discussed in detail in the article by M. Mayor et al. on p. 3809 ff.
