When refluxed in aqueous hydrochloric acid solution, 1,5,8,12‐tetraazadodecane‐glyoxal bisaminal is quantitatively converted into its amidinium salt, which is a lactam precursor. The mechanism of this unexpected reaction is discussed. (© Wiley‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, 69451 Weinheim, Germany, 2003)
