In this review we discuss the importance of sterols and their metabolites in health and disease. The review extends from precursors of cholesterol to their ultimate metabolites, i.e . bile acids. The mass spectrometry technology used for the analysis of these molecules is reviewed and the most modern methodologies highlighted.
