(Fluoromethyl)triphenylphosphonium iodide has been prepared in a simple and high yield synthesis. The salt was characterized by vibrational, NMR spectroscopy and a single‐crystal X‐ray structure analysis. The salt crystallizes in an orthorhombic space group Pna 2 1 with four formula units in the unit cell. The experimental data are discussed together with quantum chemically calculated values. The title compound is the first example of a phosphonium salt containing a P‐CH 2 F moiety. Hydrogen bonding in the crystal of the fluoromethyl phosphonium iodide is discussed.
