Nickelalactone complex [(dppe)Ni{κ 2 ‐ C , O ‐CH 2 CH 2 C(=O)O}] {dppe = 1,2‐bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane} reacts with halogens to form 3‐halo‐propionic anhydrides, [(dppe)NiX 2 ], and [(dppeO 2 ) 3 Ni][NiX 4 ] (X = Cl, Br, I). Studies of model complexes [(dppe)Ni(O 2 C t Bu) 2 ] and [(dppe)NiBr(O 2 C t Bu)] suggest that oxidation to Ni III and P–O reductive elimination are key steps in this reaction.
