NdI 3 reacted with 1 or 8/6 equiv. of [PhNMg(thf)], in thf or pyridine, to afford the imido clusters [Nd 4 (NPh) 4 I 4 (thf) n ] ( n = 3, 4) or [Nd 6 (NPh) 8 I 2 (py) 6 ], which display a cubane or rhombododecahedron core structure, respectively. In contrast, the tetranuclear U IV derivative [U 4 (NPh) 6 I 4 (py) 6 ] was obtained from the reaction of UI 3 (py) 4 with [PhNMg(thf)]. The crystal structures of these clusters are presented.(© Wiley‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, 69451 Weinheim, Germany, 2009)
