An overview on the structure–reactivity relationship of iron(II/III) complexes with Schiff base like N 2 O 2 coordinating ligands is given. The high flexibility of the ligands results in a wide range of possible applications from model complexes for the reaction with small biomolecules such as nitric oxide to molecular switching materials either as a result of the occurrence of the spin‐crossover phenomenon or the spontaneous long‐range magnetic ordering.
