Boron nitride coatings on high‐surface area MgAl 2 O 4 and Al 2 O 3 have been synthesized and characterized by transmission electron microscopy and by X‐ray powder diffraction. The metal oxide templates were coated with boron nitride using a simple nitridation in a flow of ammonia starting from ammonium borate adsorbed on MgAl 2 O 4 or γ‐Al 2 O 3 . This procedure resulted in the formation of a turbostraticboron nitride film with a thickness of a few individual BN layers.(© Wiley‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, 69451 Weinheim, Germany, 2007)
