Eu 2 I 2 (NCN) is the first compound to contain discrete empty europium tetrahedra and infinite metal chains that are constructed from edge‐sharing Eu 6 units with an open handbag‐like motif. The europium tetrahedra and chains are bridged by coordinating carbodiimide (NCN 2– ) anions in a three‐dimensional network. (© Wiley‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, 69451 Weinheim, Germany, 2006)
