The reaction of silver triflate (AgOTf) and silver dodecyl sulfate (AgDOS) with two nonmesomorphic 4,4'‐disubstituted 2,2'‐bipyridines, L n , yielded a series of bis‐chelate ionic silver complexes [Ag(L n ) 2 ]X. Complexation induced columnar mesomorphism in all the silver( I ) tetra‐branched bipyridine derivatives and the role of the counterion proved to be crucial in the generation of different symmetries of the mesophase. Remarkably, all silver( I ) complexes exhibit emission at room temperature both in solution and in the solid state. (© Wiley‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, 69451 Weinheim, Germany, 2005)
