Our backcover features immunofluorescent stainings of knee joint sections from DBA/1J mice with collagen‐induced arthritis. The tissues were stained with antibodies against HIF‐1α, VEGF, and vWF to show the effect of High‐mobility group box protein 1 (HMGB1) blockade on synovial vessel development. The image relates to the article by Park et al. (pp. 1216–1227) in which the authors describe a novel role of HMGB1 in regulation of HIF‐1α in mediating angiogenesis in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) synovium. They show that an increase in HMGB1 aggravates synovial inflammation by accelerating angiogenesis in RA via enhanced activation of HIF‐1α. These findings identify inhibition of HMGB1 as a beneficial target for the treatment of angiogenesis in RA.
