Abstract To improve the electricity service reliability, a distribution line state monitoring system has been developed. It is composed of a central control unit, remote control switches, the slave unit and monitoring sensors. The first system employed fiber‐optic voltage and a current sensor. The latest system employs a unique form of cost reduction, with no voltage sensors incorporated. This system can detect the grounding direction by the information of the phase difference between the line‐to‐line voltage and I 0 provided by the monitoring sensor, and grounded line information (64ϕ) from the substation. Installation of the system has been underway since 1992.
