Conventional energy management systems (EMS) for factories have been developed to minimize energy costs. However, we have to reduce energy consumption and CO 2 emissions to preserve the environment. This paper proposes a multiobjective optimization method based on particle swarm optimization (PSO) to minimize energy costs and CO 2 emissions, and presents its effectiveness through simulation results. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
