The purpose of Solow (in press) is to comment on a recently published method of mine (Alroy 2014). It also presents two new Bayesian methods for inferring extinction. These methods, like several others, are based on ecological or paleontological observations such as the monk seal sightings reported by Solow (1993a) or the dodo sightings listed by Roberts and Solow (2003).
