COVER PHOTO: The ecological distribution of coral species from shallow to mesophotic reefs is dependent on light, which varies drastically among local environments. Montastraea cavernosa , shown here at 50 m, is a depth‐generalist coral species found in the Caribbean. Carpenter et al. ( Ecosphere, Volume 13, Issue 8, Article e4200; https://doi.org/10.1002/ecs2.4200 ) examined shifts in coral community and the utilization of light in two coral species, including M. cavernosa , across a depth gradient in Little Cayman, Cayman Islands. The authors documented significant shifts in community composition from shallow to upper‐mesophotic reefs and found that light and photoacclimatization determined each species’ abundance.
