COVER PHOTO: Lemmings, such as Dicrostonyx groenlandicus , are essential species of the Arctic food web. The hardness of the Arctic snowpack is thought to increase with climate change. How will this affect lemmings living in the snowpack during winter? Poirier et al. ( Ecosphere , Volume 12, Issue 11, Article e03835, doi: 10.1002/ecs2.3835 ) document the impact of snow hardness on lemming locomotion, reporting that an increase in snow hardness negatively impacts lemming performance and increases their effort while digging. This may result in an increase in energy expenditure in lemmings and a negative effect on their populations. Photo credit: Mathilde Poirier.
