SUMMARY We are developing light detection and ranging (LIDAR) sensing technology based on both CMOS single‐photon avalanche diodes (SPADs) and scanning systems and on an optical fiber preamplifier. CMOS SPADs are highly sensitive detectors that can detect single photons and can form dense pixel arrays. LIDAR based on an optical preamplifier has a thumb‐sized small sensor head.
