Ultrasound sensor systems are widely used in various fields such as external environment sensors for autonomous mobile robots, mainly due to their features, small size, and easy construction. However, the conventional ultrasound sensor system is limited to measuring only the distance to the object at the time of reflection of the ultrasound wave. In this paper, a new type of high‐performance ultrasound sensor system is proposed. In this system, an ultrasound wave modulated by several featured frequencies is transmitted and the reflected waves are analyzed by means of the Fourier transform. At the same time, the system can measure the speed, the direction of the movement, and the surface ruggedness of the object. The effectiveness of the proposed system is demonstrated through experimental results. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
