Abstract Behavioral signs and symptoms and biological similarities present in anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and depressive disorder have been the spur for a variety of investigations comparing the eating disorders with affective disorder. These studies have examined and compared the phenomenology, family history, and neuroendocrinology of these disorders. A review of all the pertinent studies does not allow one to conclude that the eating disorders are a form of affective disorder.
