Evidence is reviewed to support the idea that effects of starvation cause the syndrome of anorexia nervosa to be self‐perpetuating. This article emphasizes physiological abnormalities of sympathetic activity, norepinephrine and serotonin metabolism, arginine vasopressin, gut hormones and endorphinergic activity, and how they may be implicated in this process.
