Vascular systems in the woody stem of an apple tree. Xylem (in light brown) and phloem (in blue) arise from the cambium that resides between the two. Stem cells in the cambium actively divide in an asymmetric manner, and their daughters differentiate into xylem or phloem in response to the positional information.
