Cephalochordates are being increasingly considered as models for the chordate ancestor, with phylogenetic and genomic data suggesting that they are a basal chordate. Cephalochordates are represented here by an adult lancelet flanked by pictures of larval and adult forms of bilaterian deuterostomes and protostomes and of basal cnidarian marine animals to highlight the distinct features of the chordate body plan. Pictures kindly provided by Bruno Cossermelli Vellutini, MS.C and Alvaro Esteves Migotto, Ph.D., Centro de Biologia Marinha (Cebimar), Universidade de São Paulo, Brasil.
