Summary Women with a history of gestational diabetes are at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. By identifying this high‐risk group who has not yet developed the disease, we have the opportunity to try to prevent this progression to diabetes. In this article, we review the evidence for different strategies used to prevent the onset of diabetes in women with a history of gestational diabetes. These strategies include lifestyle changes, medications and breastfeeding. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
