I didn't play team sports when I was a kid. When I got married, I acquired a 9‐year‐old stepson who played soccer. It wasn't until  his  daughters began to play softball at ages 4 and 9 that I had any interest in the sport. For the last six years, I have spent a considerable amount of time every spring and fall watching recreational‐league softball. I have learned a thing or two.
