The majority of postsecondary disability services offices in the United States operate under the values, assumptions, and knowledge gleaned from both disability laws and the medical model. Although some disability services directors have restructured their offices to serve the role of disability consultants by providing resources to their universities, the traditional philosophies on policy, procedures, and services are still rooted in medicalization. The ideas in this article derive from much contemplation and reading on disability studies, and I share them in the hopes of offering guidance to postsecondary disability services offices to adopt concepts from disability studies.
