Preparing students for the reality of life away from home during college and the potential impact on a student's mental health is a daunting task for any parent or counselor. The National Alliance on Mental Illness and the Jed Foundation have released new guidelines designed to help parents and counselors discuss topics pertaining to mental health, particularly depression, anxiety, and stress, with students. The guidelines, titled Starting the Conversation: College and Your Mental Health , include information on warning signs, prevalence of mental health conditions, mental health care and resources available on campus, and health and privacy laws.
