The responsiveness of experienced and inexperienced ring dove foster parents to young (2‐day‐old) and older (4‐ to 5‐day‐old) squabs was compared (a) 4 days after the 2nd egg was laid, and (b) at about the time of hatching. In the 4‐day groups inexperienced male foster parents showed more squab directed attention than did experienced males. In addition, older squabs introduced to inexperienced subjects gained significantly more weight than any other subgroup. In the 13‐day groups, the only differences obtained gave indications of enhanced behavioral responsiveness to the squabs by inexperienced foster parents.
