Six heterosexual pairs of 3‐yr‐old rhesus monkeys which had no previous experience with other‐sexed peers were allowed 1, 2, or 3 weeks to form social attachments. Attachment strength was evaluated by observation of the subjects' responses to seperation and reunion. Those pairs which were together for the shortest period of time exhibited the greatest amount of disturbance at separation, but they were also the most distrubed prior to separation and at reunion. The behavior of females was influenced more by length of pairing than was the behavior of males.
