Lactating mice and their young were housed with either virgin female or male mice. Virgin females cared for the young as much as did the lactating animals and in one instance were actually seen to aid in their delivery. Males displayed little caretaking behavior in the communal situation but exhibited a full range of such behavior when housed individually with young.
