Adenosine participates in the coupling of function to blood flow in the brain. With regard to the 2 mechanisms of coupling, the feedforward and feedback mechanisms, adenosine plays an important role in feedback regulation. Whereas the feedforward mechanism is based on the fast release of K + form the cell, which induces an immediate vasodilatory response of cerebral vessels, feedback regulation appears to yield a long‐term adjustment of blood flow to the metabolic demands of the brain tissue. This holds for physiological conditions and even more for pathophysiological conditions, such as hypoxia and ischemia. © 1993 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.
