Abstract P2X receptor subunits have been found in the brain, with P2X 2 , P2X 4 , and P2X 6 showing a high level of expression. Here, we review the findings about the distribution of P2X receptor subunits in cerebellum and hippocampus and discuss their implication on the possible roles of ATP as neurotransmitter/neuromodulator in the brain.
