Given a plethora of data and information that show high mortality and morbidity in Africa from preventable diseases, it appears that the public health agenda in Africa is not being given the prominence and attention it deserves. This article provides background to the problem, and calls on communities, governments, and international stakeholders to refocus their health plans and funding priorities to ensure that primary care and public health are not relegated to the rear in the pursuit of better health in Africa.
