Abstract A variety of drugs are used to prevent or treat pain and many of them are known to inhibit the activity of the voltage‐gated sodium channels (VGSCs) required for neuronal excitability. In this overview, we consider the current status and future prospects for these drugs used in two contexts: local application for acute and prolonged blockade of impulses in peripheral nerve, and systemic administration for the relief of chronic pain of metabolic, neuropathic, or cancer origin.
