As an organizational sociologist and sports fan, I have studied how team success results from organizational factors that optimize individual performance. Regardless of individual star power, some organizations have management structures and organizational cultures that promote success, while others talk a good game but, in the end, they just keep doing what they've done for decades with the same disappointing results. To that end, Robert Reich and many other observers have noted American higher education is stuck in the past.
