“Like most [higher education] administrators, I never thought I'd become an administrator. It's often seen as evil, like you either can't teach or can't publish,” said Amy Sueyoshi, Dean of the College of Ethnic Studies at San Francisco State University. In fact, when she was first offered the position as an administrator (moving from her former role in academia at SFSU), Sueyoshi was hospitalized for chest pains, and stayed at Kaiser overnight for monitoring, with fears that she was suffering from a heart condition. As it turned out, Sueyoshi was suffering from a panic attack. “That's how striking the position was,” she said. But when the position was reframed to her as a position of service, Sueyoshi made her decision. “I'm all about service,” Sueyoshi said.
