WASHINGTON, D.C. — Free speech is not only an important backbone of American democracy but also an important piece of higher education: Students grow by exposure to points of view that differ from their own. But free speech can also create contentious moments on your campus, with emotions running high. To facilitate free speech, you need a plan for how to deal with all the possibilities, as well as ensure the safety of students, who do have the right to protest speakers.
