I was an academic dean for what seemed like a jillion years (really about 15) but have been a chief academic officer for only five‐and‐a‐half years. But in some ways it feels like 15, or a jillion. I have learned a few lessons along the way that seem worth sharing. Because I am far from perfect, some have come from the school of hard knocks. Other things I did well enough, probably because of years of being a dean and working for many chief academic officers myself. I liked the way some of them did things and didn't want to do things the way others did them. And so here are a few of my lessons learned.
