Managing the legal and public relations dimensions of a crisis is an art, not a science. Legal restrictions on university speech must be understood and harmonized with the requirements of an effective public relations strategy. If your institution's response is poor, its reputation could be seriously damaged. But if handled well, a crisis can be an opportunity for a university to demonstrate in practice and publicly its adherence to the high values that make it great.
