The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston is, in a word, magnificent. Opened in 1903, the collection of art was selected and arranged in the galleries by none other than Gardner. Upon her death in 1924, she left the museum an endowment, stipulating that the pieces of art must be left as she had arranged them. I am glad she did so, for it is the most unique display of artworks in any museum I have visited.
