This paper deals with a proposed implementation exploiting the new asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) multiplexing and switching techniques. In particular, the basic architectural and functional choices are outlined and various aspects are examined regarding the implementation of a switching arrangement using ATM switching techniques, giving some indication about its hardware and software architecture and the foreseeable system performance.
