The new techniques for broadband ISDNs, such as ATM, will provide flexible and efficient allocation and bandwidth for communication services. These services may have very different traffic statistics and performance requirements. Therefore, criteria to decide about acceptance of new connection requests into the network must take into account which traffic and performance class connections belong to. This paper proposes a decision rule for admission control over mixed traffic which consists of connections possibly referring to different classes of traffic and performance. The rule, which is derived by approximate analysis, is based on the concept of maximum use of an ATM link. It is shown that it can be applied to a wide range of telecommunication services.
