Cells under stress, or when dying, produce microparticles that can be found in the serum. They carry parts of the mother cells' surface molecules such as antigens or lipid rafts and may contain RNA or DNA. Thus, by differential labeling the source of the microparticles, their function can be scrutinized, as comprehensively reviewed by Orozco and Lewis on page 502 in this issue. The cover image shows an “exploding” T‐lymphocyte that releases different types of microparticles.
