This paper reviews the present status of 2‐dimensional plasma edge codes with respect to simulation of electric fields and drift flows. Starting from experimental results and based on available simple analytic theories, different features of important mechanisms in the edge of a tokamak plasma are discussed and their availability in advanced numerical codes is established.
