Sonic transitions in a scrape‐off layer (SOL) are discussed, showing the importance of particle and momentum sources, temperature gradients, area change and viscous effects. Supersonic boundary conditions are considered. Sonic transitions are modelled over a wide range of parameters using EDGE1D.
