In this paper the kinetic theory for a weakly‐collisional plasma immersed in a static magnetic field with no curvature is considered. In the plasma an electrostatic flute ( kB = 0) instability is excited causing an anomalous wave‐particle collision frequency. In the special case of the lower‐hybrid‐drift instability a simple expression for this collision frequency is found containing the wave spectrum as a parameter.
