Abstract Interaction between dusty particles remains to be an interesting issue that still requires deeper theoretical and experimental investigations. In the present paper we formulate a theoretical approach to the calculation of effective interaction potential of dust particles on the basis of Poisson equation and experimentally measured pair correlation functions. By application of our model to the data from the liquid phase of dust formations in stratified dc glow discharge, it is shown that there is an attractive component in the interaction of dust particle (© 2011 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
