The physical model used in the photon transport module of the Monte‐Carlo code EIRENE ( www.eirene.de ) is presented. A critical assessment of the spectral line broadening mechanisms (which give the shape of the photon‐atom reaction rates) and of their relevance in a transport simulation is carried out (© 2010 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
