We have developed a theoretical approach to the equation of state of dense plasmas which has been applied to hydrogen and deuterium, various metals and noble gases. We compare Hugoniot curves and the sound speed with shock‐wave experiments and other theoretical predictions. Especially, the nonmetal‐to‐metal transition which occurs in dense plasmas at high pressures is discussed by means of the electrical conductvity. (© 2005 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
